Reading

Don’t forget!  The standard reading homework for the entire school is to read for 20 minutes!  Please let us know that this is happening by having your child respond to what he/she has read by writing in his/her homework folder.  It is best when you sign it as well, to let us know that reading is occurring with supervision.

Math

Unit 9: Making “Cents” of  Money – In this unit your child will be learning the value of the penny, nickel and dime.  They will also be counting by fives, tens, and counting on by ones.

Unit 10: Adding and Subtracting, Hand in Hand – We will be adding and subtracting at the same time in this unit.  Please remind your child to look for plus (+) and minus (–) to determine whether to add or subtract.

Unit 11: Exploring Measurement – Your first grader will be measuring by the inch and with non-standard units like cubes and their own feet!  Please check for homework every night.

Seasonal Changes

Please keep in mind that we will be going outside when we can for recess this winter.  Please have your child appropriately dressed.  Also, have all jackets and coats labeled!

Reminders….

The second grade will be studying “Weather” in the months of February and March.  We will start new units in “Subtracting with Regrouping and Money” as well.  Please encourage and support your child in completing his or her homework nightly in reading and math and reviewing math facts.  Each concept builds upon another therefore, we want to reinforce each concept through the homework practices.

Please check to see that your child has crayons and pencils for the rest of the school year.  In addition, our goal in second grade is to have the best attendance rate for the school.  Parents, we need your help to achieve in this goal.  Help your child to be ready and prepared for each day.  Thank you for your continued support.

Wow! It is hard to believe that this year is already half over.  Third grade has had so many wonderful things happening during the first half of the year.  In Math we are currently working on our measurement unit.  Parents, our students are having a little bit of difficulty with converting between units.  Please practice converting inches to feet or yards with your child.  Our next unit will be on Geometry.  A study guide will be sent home to review concepts that will be covered during this unit.

Coming up this spring, we are planning to take the third grade students to the National Zoo in Washington DC.  We hope this will  be a rewarding experience for all of their hard work this year.  We just  want to remind parents and students that math and reading homework needs to be completed each night.  Thanks for your continue support.
