Expectations:  Set them high and aim for success!

Why are expectations important to your children in elementary school? Do we have the right to expect child(ren) to behave, follow directions, and get good grades? Most importantly should we expect students to come prepared with positive attitudes and good character? Well, if you answered yes to any of these questions, you have great expectations for your child(ren). In a generation filled with video games, MP3 players, High School Musical, and cool clothes…we should still expect our future leaders to be successful!  When we soften the realistic expectation on what others expect from us, we create an environment where children think they can have it all without limits! Let me break this down even further. Are you expected to provide a home, clothes, food, love, and other household necessities for your family? Yes, would most likely be the answer. The same applies to your children.  If we don’t expect them to follow the rules, be on time to school, and be respectful/responsible individuals, we leave the door open to excuses and the lack of ownership when they are wrong. These life lessons are valuable.

Expectation Suggestions:

Being Respectful at all times. Respect is expected. Teaching children/students this important value will last a life time. Most people want to be respected but have not learned to be respectful (Fay 2005).

Be prepared to work.  We have to teach our children that working hard does pay off in the end. Working hard is a requirement for life.  To win is great, but to lose with grace is a life lesson!

Entitlement:  We are not entitled to all the riches (video games) and gold (hip clothes). BUT those things are earned with good CHARACTER, respect, and hard work.

At the end of the day, ask yourself one question: Do I expect the best from my children/students?

5th Grade News

Happy New Year to everyone!  We are ready to start the New Year off with a kick!

The fourth grade is now divided in half between Mrs. Outten and Mrs. Travis according to ability levels in Math  class to better serve the need of our students.  In Science, we are working on Powders and Crystals.  In writing, we are working on several things, including an essay contest!  Stay tuned for more exciting things going on this year!  Make sure to do your homework every night in order to achieve your goals.

Mrs. Outten

Mrs. Travis

Happy New Year!  Our students successfully took their StarMath and SRI tests this month.  Results for each test will be sent home with your student’s report card.  As we begin the second half of our school year, we encourage our students to continue studying their math facts and completing homework assignments each and every night.  We are currently working very hard on fractions in math class as well as beginning to study electrical circuits in Science and the American Revolution in History.

We continue teaching a wide variety of writing, reading and enrichment activities to prepare them for whatever their futures may hold.  We teach our students how important it is to be responsible for their own actions.  Showing responsibility prepares students for some of life’s biggest challenges.  When we teach our children to be responsible students, we are enabling them to grow up to become responsible, successful adults.
