Where did the year go?  As we begin the final 9-week term of our school year, we continue to encourage our students to continue studying math facts and completing homework assignments each and every night.  We are working very hard to prepare our students for the upcoming Maryland State Assessments.  The Maryland State Assessments (MSA) will begin on April 1-2 for Reading, April 8-9 for Math and April 28-29 for Science.  To prepare our students for the coming year, 6th grade Orientation for 5th graders is scheduled on May 20 at 6:00 p.m. at Maces Lane Middle School.  We continue teaching our students a wide variety of writing, reading and enrichment activities to prepare them for their academic futures; middle and high school, college and beyond!

We have several wonderful opportunities coming up as we draw closer to the end of the year.  First is a planned field trip to Assateague Island on April 11.  The island is inhabited by two herds of Chincoteague horses.  A common belief is that a Spanish galleon filled with livestock sank offshore and the surviving animals swam to the island. Equally probable is that early settlers abandoned some stock on the island which then flourished.  Horses have been penned on Assateague and Chincoteague islands since the early 1800s.  The second is our way of rewarding students for basically “doing the right thing” each and every day.  Our End-of-the-Year Trip will be for the students who have earned 80% or better on their daily behavior charts.  We will be sending more information home as we get closer to the actual date.

On behalf of the entire 5th grade staff, we wish our students the very best as they continue their journeys of academic success.  We ask that you continue to grow as individuals, make the best choices possible and never give up your dreams.  Have a great summer…and look towards the future!

“Spring” into success with good attendance!

Are morning’s a struggle getting your children ready for school? Do you sometimes fight with them about what to wear and catching the bus on time? For many of us the most hectic part of the day is in the morning. As you prepare to organize your day, get the kids ready, prepare breakfast/lunch and prepare for work you are most likely exhausted before you leave the house. Children will appreciate the structured routines one day! It helps to create less stress and establishes a pattern.
A good pattern is very important at Choptank. Children spend about 7 hours a day at school which adds up to be about 40+ hours a week. This does not include if they are involved in after school and/or extra-curricular activities. If they miss school they miss instruction and learning experiences. I know that illnesses and family emergencies can not be avoided, but always try and have your children here each day (on time). You will not regret the successful academic experiences and love for learning they develop.
